The UAB Unesco Chair
The Unesco Chairs are awarded to individual universities, and they bring with them an undertaking to carry out teaching, research and dissemination work in a field which Unesco sees as a priority.
The Chairs have had an impact around the world and exist in all areas of learning. In many cases, Chairs working in the same academic area have formed networks.
The Chairs are funded by public and/or private bodies which identify with Unesco’s objectives.

Establishment of the UAB Unesco Chair in Communication
The UAB Unesco Chair in Communication was established in 1989, and was the first such Unesco Chair in the world.
The agreement establishing the Chair was signed by the Unesco Director General, Federico Mayor Zaragoza, and UAB Rector, Dr. Ramon Pascual. From the outset, the Chair received financial support from the Catalan Government (Generalitat de Catalunya).

Chair direction and management
Manuel Parés i Maicas, Professor of the Department of Journalism and Communication Science at UAB, was designated Director of the Chair by the university rector. A former president of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (AIERI/IAMCR), Dr. Parés continues to be the Chair director.
The Unesco Chair in Communication is managed by the UAB Institute of Communication (InCom). The Chair participates in the activities of the UAB Faculty of Communication Science, the Department of Audiovisual Communication and Advertising, and the Department of Journalism and Communication Science.
Mercè Díez, lecturer of the UAB Department of Journalism and Communication Science, is Chair Coordinator.
